The Cyathea cunninghamii is a rare and endangered fern of the Otway Ranges, Victoria Australia. The Slender tree fern can grow very tall with a remarkably narrow trunk and a small crown of dark green, lacy fronds. The frond base (stipe) is black and is covered with light brown, straw coloured scales.
The colour of the scales is one way of telling the different Cyathea tree ferns apart. Dicksonia tree ferns like the Soft Tree Fern have soft hairs at the frond base (stipe) while the Cyathea tree ferns have different coloured scales.
This tree fern grows naturally in the south of Victoria and Tasmania and is a cool rainforest species usually found in deep gullies in wet forests. It must have protection from the wind for it to thrive and is a much more delicate tree fern than the Cyathea australis, Rough tree fern. It will grow successfully in a cool moist fernery. The Cyathea cunninghamii is the only tree fern that grows both in Australia and New Zealand. It is not considered endangered in New Zealand.
